There are different  back problems  that require disc surgery. Chief among them are cervical disc, artificial disc replacement and  lumbar disc problems  that require disc surgery to be performed on these discs.  In artificial disc replacement, the doctors make incisions in the abdominal wall in order for them to access the problematic vertebral segment. They then work to remove the degenerated disc that was at the centre of the problem by dissecting behind the muscles and accessing the contents of the abdomen without affecting them.

The doctors will then reach for the defective disc and then replace it with another one. In lumbar fusion surgery, the doctors operate on the patient to help stabilize the particular segment that houses the degenerated disc. In this disc surgery, the back, either alone or together with the stomach, is opened through incision in order to reach the affected segment and then the affected part removed and replaced with a new and better one. Some other hardware-like cages are also inserted to help the fusion heal by immobilizing the affected segment.

The cervical disc surgery on the other hand involves the removal of the affected disc and any other impinging fragments of the disc. The pressure on the nerves is eased through the distraction of the disc space. Through the aid and use of x-rays, the artificial discs are implanted and help restore the original height of the disc before they were distorted and shrank.

Laser back surgery, unlike disc surgery, uses laser in place of a scalpel to make incisions. The laser (which is a beam of light) is used to cut tissues. In this way, there is very minimal loss of blood and the resultant scars from the open surgery are drastically minimized. Laser surgery allows the patient to recuperate faster and their (laser surgeries) chances of turning successful are much higher than for the open back surgeries.

There are however other ways of dealing with back problems. It is not necessary that every back problem has to be operated on. Surgeries on the back are only undertaken in very severe cases whereby the quality of life of a person has been affected and they cannot go about their day-to-day activities as they used to, and all other avenues have been explored.
