Disc Surgery and Lower Back Surgery

There are different  back problems  that require disc surgery. Chief among them are cervical disc, artificial disc replacement and  lumbar disc problems  that require disc surgery to be performed on these discs.  In artificial disc replacement, the doctors make incisions in the abdominal wall in order for them to access the problematic vertebral segment. They then work to remove the degenerated disc that was at the centre of the problem by dissecting behind the muscles and accessing the contents of the abdomen without affecting them.

The doctors will then reach for the defective disc and then replace it with another one. In lumbar fusion surgery, the doctors operate on the patient to help stabilize the particular segment that houses the degenerated disc. In this disc surgery, the back, either alone or together with the stomach, is opened through incision in order to reach the affected segment and then the affected part removed and replaced with a new and better one. Some other hardware-like cages are also inserted to help the fusion heal by immobilizing the affected segment.

The cervical disc surgery on the other hand involves the removal of the affected disc and any other impinging fragments of the disc. The pressure on the nerves is eased through the distraction of the disc space. Through the aid and use of x-rays, the artificial discs are implanted and help restore the original height of the disc before they were distorted and shrank.

Laser back surgery, unlike disc surgery, uses laser in place of a scalpel to make incisions. The laser (which is a beam of light) is used to cut tissues. In this way, there is very minimal loss of blood and the resultant scars from the open surgery are drastically minimized. Laser surgery allows the patient to recuperate faster and their (laser surgeries) chances of turning successful are much higher than for the open back surgeries.

There are however other ways of dealing with back problems. It is not necessary that every back problem has to be operated on. Surgeries on the back are only undertaken in very severe cases whereby the quality of life of a person has been affected and they cannot go about their day-to-day activities as they used to, and all other avenues have been explored.

Acute Back Pain

September 15th, 2009 -- Posted in Acute Back Pain | No Comments »

   >>>>FREE 7 Day Back Pain Cure Book!

Back pain is one of the biggest problems around the world today. Acute back pain and acute lower back pain have been plaguing humanity since the dawn of time. The causes of these problems are varied and numerous. Some of them are treatable and preventable  , and others are related to growing old.

extreme lower back pain

Many problems with acute back pain can be related to bad posture, and poor furniture. Although there are other causes these tend to be the culprits in most cases. When kids are young and their parents don’t teach good posture they grow up thinking it’s okay to sit at an odd angle all the time. This leads to acute lower back pain in the long run, and can seriously impact their health when they get older.

Sitting for long periods of time on shoddy, or temporary chairs can also cause back problems. Of course working in conditions where you have to bend up and down multiple times a day can also contribute to the pain. As we said there are a lot of causes for this type of problem, and a lot of people claiming to have the answer. Many people claim that if you wear supportive garments that your back will be fixed. Others think you need medication, and even more people think you need weekly therapeutic massages.

While some of these solutions may work for acute back pain they are just temporary stop gaps. Medicine just relieves the pain, and does not solve the problem. Massages may feel good at the time, but they often do not stop the pain from returning. Normal back pain is something we all deal with, but if it turns into severe acute lower back pain, then you might have a problem.

Acute back pain is pain in a specific area of your back. We all suffer from this in life; it’s just something we deal with. Severe acute lower back pain may indicate a more serious problem, as the kidneys are in this area as well as many key muscles. The good news is there are several forms of treatment available for back problems that don’t involve expensive doctors, or medications.

The first thing you can do is sit up straight when you sit down. If you have bad posture then work on trying to fix it. If you need to shove a pillow behind yourself when sitting then do so. It will take a while to get used to and your back will complain, but a little discomfort in the short term will yield great benefits in the long term. If that doesn’t work try heating pads, and ice bags to relieve the pain.

Although these aren’t solutions they can often help a strained, pulled, or cramping muscle much better than a pain reliever. You can also undertake exercises to strengthen the muscles that give you the most problem. This is a long term solution but is completely natural, and there are no side effects other than stronger muscles. However if your problem persists, or gets worse please contact your doctor immediately. Persistent acute back pain can indicate a serious problem and should not be ignored.
